The San Francisco 49ers officially hired former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods, who will coach the Niners' defensive backs and coordinate the team's pass defense in 2019.
On Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers officially announced the previously rumored hiring of former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Woods, who was the defensive backs coach for the Broncos prior to his two-year stint as defensive coordinator in Denver, will serve two roles for his new team. The 49ers announced Woods' official title will be "defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator."
Woods will replace San Francisco's former defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley, who left the team earlier this month for a co-defensive coordinator position at Ohio State. The 49ers did not have a passing game coordinator in 2018.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network first reported that the 49ers would add Woods to their coaching staff on Tuesday:

Woods previously worked with Kyle Shanahan as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' coaching staff from 2004 to 2005, which the 49ers' head coach noted in an official press release from the team earlier this afternoon:
"In addition to being a tremendous coach with a wealth of knowledge, Joe is a great person that we believe will help bring the best out of our players," said Head Coach Kyle Shanahan. "Since we first worked together in Tampa, Joe has continued to gain invaluable experience in different schemes and coverages that will benefit our defense. Anybody who is familiar with Joe as a coach knows that he is passionate about the fundamentals of the game and we look forward to seeing the impact he has on our team."
Following his time in Tampa Bay, Woods spent his next eight seasons in the NFL as the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings before working in the same role with the Oakland Raiders in 2014.

New 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen may not have all the answers yet in regards to how his defense will perform in the upcoming season, but it sounds like his approach will remain largely similar to what the team has done in the past under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Sorensen held his first media session as 49ers defensive coordinator before the team's rookie minicamp on Friday and provided a glimpse on how he wants his defense to look once they take the field in September. The plan is to show the NFL that the 49ers haven't changed much in terms of intensity and flying to the ball.

49ers waive defensive lineman ahead of rookie minicamp

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have waived defensive lineman Spencer Waege.
Waege (6-5, 295) initially joined the team as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2023. He was waived by the team on August 27, 2023. However, he re-signed with the team's practice squad on November 15, 2023, where he remained for the remainder of the season.
A 25-year-old native of South Shore, South Dakota, Waege attended North Dakota State University for six years (2017-22), appearing in 57 games with 29 starts. He registered 138 tackles, 42 tackles for a loss, 20.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, four passes defensed, and one fumble recovery during his collegiate career. Logan Ryan appeared in five regular season games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, with two of those appearances in a starting role. Ryan also played in all three of the 49ers' postseason games, including the Super Bowl last February.
Ryan's time with the 49ers started a little differently considering he wasn't in the league when the team called him. Ryan was on a cruise with his family when the 49ers decided they needed another defensive back.
