It's a new year and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Trent Taylor, who for the past two seasons has worn No. 81, will hit the football field with a new number during the upcoming season. He announced via Twitter that he is "ready to go to war rocking [number] 15."

The 49ers made Taylor a fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech in 2017. He impressed during his rookie campaign with 43 catches for 430 yards and two touchdowns through 15 games and one start. Taylor's recovery from offseason back surgery set him back in 2018 when he hauled in just 26 catches for 215 yards with a touchdown.

"I feel like my back is back to normal now," Taylor told NBC Sports Bay Area in February. "I just knew that I needed a little more time than I was able to get throughout the season. That's why I've been really looking forward to this offseason.

"(I'm) getting back to building my body up the right way. I'm feeling great right now. We're going to continue working on that and building myself up so I can be ready to have a great season [in 2019]."

So if you bought a No. 81 Trent Taylor jersey, as our own Matt Barr did, you might be out of luck.

Or maybe not...

It is important to note that Terrell Owens being inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame this season does not mean his No. 81 jersey with the team is being retired. It is unlikely to be.

Another interesting note is that new 49ers wide receiver Jordan Matthews wore No. 81 during his first stint with the Philadelphia Eagles.

No. 15 became available with the departure of veteran wide receiver Pierre Garçon.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed reporters after the second day of the 2024 NFL Draft. Naturally, they were asked about any trade discussions the team might have had during the draft so far. Speculation arose that the 49ers might consider trading wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel. Samuel's name was the focus of trade rumors heading into Day 2. Lynch affirmed that they did not entertain any offers. "We're happy with our wide receiver group," Lynch said. "Actually, more than happy. We're really thrilled with it and thrilled to have added [Florida WR] Ricky [Pearsall] to that group and even make it stronger." By David Bonilla

Trent Williams will be 36 at the start of the 2024 NFL season. While retirement isn't on his mind just yet, the San Francisco 49ers must consider a succession plan for left tackle. "With Trent Williams entering the twilight of his career, the 49ers have to find an eventual replacement on the edge," Brooks noted.
