The San Francisco 49ers made a splash in free agency this offseason by signing Mike Evans, a move that headlined the team's efforts to revamp its receiving corps.

One ESPN analyst believes the 49ers shouldn't stop there. He thinks San Francisco should add another accomplished veteran receiver by signing former All-Pro Stefon Diggs.

Diggs spent last season with the AFC champion New England Patriots, recording 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. He also contributed 14 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown during the Patriots' playoff run.

Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum believes the 49ers could still get one productive season out of the 32-year-old receiver.

"Even though they added Mike Evans and drafted De'Zhaun Stribling in the second round, I still think if they brought in one more veteran receiver for a team that is in a win-now mode, I think you'd get one year out of Stefon Diggs, and San Francisco has done that over the years," Tannenbaum said on NFL Live.

ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum believes the 49ers should sign FA WR Stefon Diggs

"Even though they added Mike Evans and drafted De'Zhaun Stribling in the second round, I still think if they brought in one more veteran receiver for a team that is in a win now mode, I think you'd… pic.twitter.com/RPX6T0X4BD
— Coach Yac 🗣 (@Coach_Yac) July 16, 2026

Evans wasn't the only veteran receiver the 49ers added this offseason. The team also signed Christian Kirk as part of its effort to replace past contributors Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne, who departed in free agency.

A two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl selection, Diggs has totaled 11,504 receiving yards and 74 touchdowns over 11 NFL seasons. He entered the league as a fifth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Tannenbaum believes Diggs could provide valuable veteran depth while San Francisco's younger receivers continue to develop.

"Again, he's past his prime, but could come on in while Stribling develops, see what you have in Pearsall, who's been hurt," he said. "I think he (Diggs) can help the 49ers' passing attack."

The Pro Football Hall of Famer quickly turns around, walks into the crowd of spectators, and chases after the heckler while asking those nearby, "Which one?" in an effort to identify the person responsible.

The San Francisco 49ers made a major effort this offseason to improve their wide receiver room. The biggest addition was veteran Mike Evans, who gives quarterback Brock Purdy a reliable boundary and red-zone target unlike any receiver he has had during his NFL career.

The 49ers' offense was already among the league's best in 2025, ranking seventh in total yards, 10th in points scored, and fifth in passing yards. However, one former NFL safety believes head coach Kyle Shanahan's unit could reach an even higher level in 2026, becoming the best in the league.

Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner shared his bold prediction during an appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football, pointing to the number of elite playmakers San Francisco can deploy.

"You have an All-Pro to the left (Evans) that demands double coverage," Whitner said. "You have TE George Kittle—demands double coverage over the middle. You have to play the run with RB Christian McCaffrey, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield. He demands a linebacker, safety, or a corner on him.

"Then, you have WR Ricky Pearsall, who was the number three separator in the NFL last year. Who do you double? You can't double everybody."

"I think this will be the No. 1 offense in the NFL this year." @DonteWhitner on Kyle Shanahan and the @49ers offense 👀 pic.twitter.com/YKrGt7ikmc
— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) July 16, 2026

For the 49ers, the biggest key to reaching their offensive potential in 2026 will be staying healthy. San Francisco battled through a significant number of injuries last season but still managed to earn a playoff berth. Despite the adversity, the team remained in contention for the NFC West title and home-field advantage heading into Week 18.

Whitner believes Shanahan is among the best in the business at deploying his offensive weapons and exploiting opposing defenses' weaknesses.

"And that's what Kyle Shanahan does better than any other coach," Whitner continued. "He figures out who the matchup problem is, and then he's going to figure out who your weakness is on defense, and he's going to attack you. So, I think this will be the number one offense in the NFL this year."

It's certainly a bold prediction, especially with the NFC West expected to be one of the NFL's most competitive divisions in 2026. However, if Shanahan can keep his offensive stars healthy, the 49ers have the talent to challenge the Super Bowl favorites, the Los Angeles Rams, and the defending-champion Seattle Seahawks.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was honored as the Best Comeback Athlete on Wednesday night at the 2026 ESPYS in New York.

McCaffrey earned the award over golfer Anthony Kim, Angel City FC defender Savy King, and Texas A&M volleyball standout Kyndal Stowers.

The recognition follows a remarkable 2025 campaign in which McCaffrey totaled 2,126 scrimmage yards, including 1,202 rushing yards, and scored 17 total touchdowns. After Achilles tendinitis and a PCL injury limited him to just four games in 2024, he returned to reestablish himself as one of the NFL's premier offensive playmakers.

McCaffrey started all 17 games in 2025 and also earned AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. He is set to enter his 10th NFL season and has been with the 49ers since a midseason trade from the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

A dual threat as both a runner and receiver, McCaffrey has accumulated 12,979 career scrimmage yards and 98 total touchdowns. His outstanding comeback season also earned him recognition in ESPN's annual survey of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, which ranked McCaffrey as the league's fourth-best running back entering the 2026 season.

San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey is coming off an NFL Comeback Player of the Year campaign. In 2025, he totaled an impressive 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns, reestablishing himself as one of the NFL's most dynamic offensive weapons.

McCaffrey led the NFL with 413 offensive touches. However, that heavy workload could become a concern heading into the 2026 season. At least, that's the implication behind Bleacher Report's latest prediction.

McCaffrey has eclipsed 2,000 scrimmage yards three times in his career. Unfortunately, the two previous occasions were followed by injury-plagued seasons. After posting a career-high 2,392 scrimmage yards in 2019, McCaffrey appeared in just three games in 2020. Then, after totaling 2,023 scrimmage yards and earning NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023, injuries limited him to only four games in 2024.

Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently identified five overlooked rookie running backs who could make a major impact in 2026, including 49ers third-round draft pick Kaelon Black. The former Indiana standout rushed for 1,040 yards and 10 touchdowns during his final collegiate season and enters training camp as the favorite to serve as McCaffrey's primary backup.

Of course, Black emerging as an impact rookie would likely mean a lighter workload for McCaffrey. If that's part of the 49ers' plan to better manage the All-Pro's touches and keep him healthy for the postseason, it could benefit the offense. If it's the result of another injury, however, it would be a significant setback for the 49ers' offense, as McCaffrey is quarterback Brock Purdy's most versatile weapon.

"Christian McCaffrey topped 2,000 total yards for the 49ers last year," Davenport wrote, "but he's also a 30-year-old back coming off a season where he had a career-high 413 touches. After each of his first two 2,000-yard campaigns, he missed at least 13 games.

"If McCaffrey goes down, Black is going to be thrust into a prominent role—potentially as San Francisco's lead back."

The encouraging news for the 49ers is that Black has already made a strong impression on his new teammates, including veteran fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

"I've been so impressed by Kaelan Black," Juszczyk recently told Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. "He, number one, is a ball of muscle. This guy is absolutely jacked, and he's explosive. That's really what has stood out to me—is how twitchy and explosive he gets through that hole.

"And he runs so hard, and you can feel that even in practice without pads on, which is unique. Because I know I've felt it. I've been engaged in a block, and him just working through the hole, and just being forced to kind of run into that guy that I'm already engaged in, and I could feel that force that he was exerting."

Black's impact hasn't been limited to the practice field. Juszczyk also praised the rookie's ability to quickly grasp head coach Kyle Shanahan's complex offensive system.

"So, been really impressed with him physically, mentally as well," Juszczyk said. "Just a guy that seems to get it, that works hard, that cares about the classroom. So, I think there's a lot of good things ahead for Kaelan, and I think he's going to help us."

Whether Black is called upon because of load management or an injury setback, the rookie could position himself for a meaningful role. For the 49ers, the ideal scenario is simple: keep McCaffrey healthy while developing the young backup to contribute more in the future.

The San Francisco 49ers opened last season with a 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. The NFC West rivals didn't meet again until the regular-season finale, when first place in the division and home-field advantage were on the line.

This time, the Seahawks went into Levi's Stadium and handed the 49ers a 13-3 defeat. Two weeks later, Seattle dominated San Francisco 41-6 at Lumen Field in the NFC Divisional Round before continuing its postseason run to a Super Bowl championship.

The Seahawks clearly had the 49ers' number late in the season. While injuries played a significant role in San Francisco's struggles, Seattle proved to be a difficult matchup and is expected to remain one of the 49ers' biggest obstacles in the NFC West during the 2026 season.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald joined Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area at the American Century Championship golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe. Despite Seattle's success against San Francisco late last season, Macdonald made it clear he has tremendous respect for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"Kyle, he's the best in the business," Macdonald said. "I mean, he doesn't have the track record that he has by accident, so we've got a ton of respect for him."

Macdonald noted that division rivalries become increasingly challenging because the teams know each other so well after facing off at least twice every season. That familiarity forces coaches to continually adapt and evolve their game plans.

Preparing for Shanahan's 49ers presents a unique challenge.

"There's a great detail in which they coach, and there's a precision to their offense, and there's a physicality to what they do, and it's complementary," Macdonald said. "Everything's married off each other. All the route stems are married off each other. They vary their pass protections. The run game is diverse but complementary.

"Again, they're constantly evolving, so you have to keep pace with that, and it's not easy to do, and that's why they've been so successful."

The 49ers and Seahawks won't meet until Week 5 of the 2026 season, with the rematch set for Week 12—two NFC West showdowns that will be highly anticipated.

Despite the seemingly never-ending Brandon Aiyuk saga, the San Francisco 49ers have had a productive offseason, addressing several positional weaknesses and reshaping key areas of the roster. That said, a few concerns remain, and some spots still feel more unsettled than others. With training camp quickly approaching, let's rank the 49ers' position groups heading into the season.

1. Quarterback

This is a relatively straightforward choice. 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy is a top-10 option at the position across the league, and many, myself included, believe he has not yet reached his ceiling. Purdy was limited to nine starts last season but guided the 49ers to a 7-2 record in those games while throwing for 2,167 yards, completing nearly 70% of his attempts, and totaling 20 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Seven of those interceptions came over his first four starts, yet the 49ers still managed to go 3-1 during that stretch. If Purdy were to miss time, Mac Jones gives San Francisco one of the league's better backup quarterback options. Jones proved his value last season, throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions while guiding the 49ers to a 5-3 record during that span.

2. Wide receiver

The 49ers made a major addition this offseason, signing future Hall of Famer Mike Evans to lead the room. It is a rebuilt group, with Christian Kirk also joining via free agency to operate from the slot and help stretch the field alongside Evans, Ricky Pearsall, and explosive rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. Collectively, the top four options at the position give Brock Purdy and head coach Kyle Shanahan plenty of ways to attack defenses through the passing game.

3. Defensive line

This was one of the areas the 49ers clearly needed to address this offseason, and they did. Nick Bosa remains the leader of the group, but he spent the majority of last season sidelined following another knee surgery.

Getting Bosa back to full health would make a significant difference in 2025-26, and the 49ers have also added help around him. San Francisco traded for Osa Odighizuwa, an interior defender who brings legitimate pass-rushing ability from the inside.

With the defense now better positioned to generate pressure both inside and off the edge, this should create more opportunities for Alfred Collins and Mykel Williams, both of whom are poised for breakout seasons. C.J. West and Keion White also provide viable depth.

4. Linebacker

The 49ers still have the top middle linebacker in football in Fred Warner. Like Bosa, Warner spent much of last season injured, so getting the quarterback of the defense back to form in 2025-26 is both imperative and extremely beneficial.

San Francisco also brought back Dre Greenlaw as his running mate, giving the team a chance to once again field one of the league's stronger linebacker duos. The concern is depth. Both Warner and Greenlaw have dealt with injury issues in recent years, and the organization sent Dee Winters to Dallas, where he will have more opportunities than he would have had in San Francisco with Greenlaw returning.

Tatum Bethune played well in spurts when called upon last season, giving newly appointed defensive coordinator Raheem Morris a reliable third option. Garret Wallow also performed well in the postseason when Bethune was injured, and there is still some optimism around young players Nick Martin and Jaden Dugger. Even so, this remains a top-heavy position group.

5. Cornerback

Both Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green appeared to take a step back last season. I still believe Lenoir has cornerback 1 ability, but the lack of pass rush put additional pressure on the 49ers' secondary throughout the year. Under Morris' tutelage, this may be the group with the greatest opportunity for improvement.

Upton Stout is entering his second season, and while he struggled at times, he showed enough tools to believe he can develop into a high-level slot corner. Depth remains a question, with Darrell Luter Jr., Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, and veteran Eli Apple rounding out the position group.

6. Running back

This ranking may come as a bit of a surprise, but while Christian McCaffrey remains an elite running back, there are legitimate depth concerns behind him. After McCaffrey, there is a fair amount of uncertainty. Since the 49ers rarely spell him for extended stretches, an injury would put more responsibility on Jordan James, Isaac Guerendo, and rookie Kaelon Black. It is not the worst depth chart in the league, but there is a clear drop-off after CMC, and at this stage, he is a high-performance player with plenty of mileage on him.

7. Offensive line

This is the group that concerns me the most heading into 2025-26. It is led by a future Hall of Famer in Trent Williams, but like CMC, Williams has accumulated plenty of mileage, and there is always a level of uncertainty that comes with age in such a physically demanding position.

Despite that, Williams remains the best offensive lineman in this group. The strength of the unit is at tackle, with Colton McKivitz breaking out last season opposite Williams. The bigger concern is the interior, particularly at left guard. As of now, Connor Colby is slated to start there, but it is an area I had hoped GM John Lynch would upgrade in free agency.

Jake Brendel is a steady but average center, while Dominick Puni has shown flashes of excellence in the past but struggled at times last season. Puni still has considerable upside and could become a difference maker this year if he puts everything together.

8. Tight end

There is a reasonable argument for flipping the offensive line and tight end rankings, but George Kittle's long-term health remains a factor. Jake Tonges, who broke out in Kittle's absence last season, could see more consistent work moving forward.

He has established himself as the team's No. 2 tight end behind Kittle and ahead of Luke Farrell. If Kittle is healthy, and he is paired with CMC and the trio of pass catchers, this 49ers offense has the pieces to be as explosive as ever with Shanahan and Purdy leading the way.

9. Special teams

The 49ers re-signed kicker Eddy Pineiro, who stabilized the position after the Jake Moody experiment. Pineiro hit a league-leading 96.6% of his field goal attempts last year, converting 28 of 29 attempts. He did miss four extra points, though.

One concern when San Francisco brought in Pineiro was his range, but he answered those questions by going 6 of 7 from beyond 50 yards. The 49ers are also bringing in a new punter this season, moving on from veteran Thomas Morstead and replacing him with Corliss Waitman.

The organization also failed to retain return specialist Skyy Moore and will likely rely on Jacob Cowing and Isaac Guerendo. It is a capable group, but collectively, it ranks ninth until it proves otherwise.

10. Safety

Last but not least, the safety position remains a real concern heading into the season. This group will be led by hard-hitting Malik Mustapha and Ji'Ayir Brown, with Marques Sigle often mixing in.

As currently constructed, the trio ranks among the weaker groups in the league, and John Lynch failed to address the position this offseason.

Perhaps they surprise us, and I will gladly revisit that assessment if they do, but for now, the lack of proven talent and overall impact on the backend is a serious concern.

The debate surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy continues, even a year after he became one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Despite his accomplishments, questions persist about where Purdy belongs among the league's elite quarterbacks.

Purdy was left off ESPN's list of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks entering the 2026 season. In fact, despite his impressive résumé, he has yet to crack the annual rankings.

One former teammate believes that's an oversight.

Houston Texans wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson, who played alongside Purdy at Iowa State, recently appeared on NFL Network's Good Morning Football and was asked whether he considers the 49ers quarterback a top-10 quarterback.

"Yeah, I don't see why not," Hutchinson answered. "You have to prove it every single season, in every single game, and I think that's exactly what he's done. I'm super excited for him because I don't even think this is the best that we've seen of him, and I know that he believes that himself, too.

"Like, there's so many areas that he has to work on, and I'm excited to see him put it all together, and I just wish him the best. That's my guy."

.@XBH__8 has nothing but love for former college teammate Brock Purdy 🤝@HawkeyeFootball pic.twitter.com/T2seDLDFhM
— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) July 15, 2026

Hutchinson's comments reflect the confidence of someone who watched Purdy develop firsthand during their time together at Iowa State. While many continue to debate the quarterback's standing among the NFL's best, Hutchinson believes Purdy still hasn't reached his ceiling.

In four seasons with the 49ers, Purdy has thrown for 11,685 yards, 84 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions while compiling a franchise-best 104.0 career passer rating. Although a turf toe injury sidelined him for eight games last season, he still finished with 2,167 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in nine starts.

The 49ers enter the 2026 season with Super Bowl aspirations, and Purdy's health will be a major factor in determining whether San Francisco can make another championship run.

The San Francisco 49ers made sweeping changes to their roster this offseason. While the additions of wide receivers Mike Evans and Christian Kirk generated most of the headlines, the team also focused on strengthening its defense.

CBS Sports' Josh Edwards recently identified each NFC team's biggest roster hole heading into training camp, noting that San Francisco's biggest challenge in 2026 may simply be staying healthy enough to contend.

Several of the 49ers' biggest stars are coming off significant injuries. Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are recovering from ACL tears, tight end George Kittle is returning from a torn Achilles suffered during the playoffs, and linebacker Fred Warner is back after a dislocated and fractured right ankle.

Running back Christian McCaffrey played all 17 games last season, but missed 13 contests during the 2024 campaign.

Edwards believes the 49ers are well-positioned for a deep playoff run if their core players can remain healthy throughout the 2026 season.

Some would consider San Francisco's pass rush or interior offensive line as its biggest roster weakness. Instead, Edwards singled out the defensive tackle position. The 49ers have invested heavily in rebuilding the interior defensive line, selecting Alfred Collins and CJ West in the 2025 NFL Draft, adding Gracen Halton this year, and trading for veteran Osa Odighizuwa.

"If one position has to be singled out, it would be the defensive line," Edwards wrote. "Osa Odighizuwa brings stability to the unit, but others on rookie contracts need to take the next step in their careers."

Along the offensive line, there is an unsettled competition at left guard and an aging Jake Brendel at center. However, Edwards views that position group as less of a concern for one key reason: head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"The interior offensive line remains a point of contention between myself and 49ers fans," Edwards noted. "Although the collection is not all that exhilarating, Kyle Shanahan has proven that he can win with whomever he opens with in training camp."

The San Francisco 49ers proved last season why they may have the NFL's best quarterback situation. When starter Brock Purdy missed time with a turf toe injury, veteran backup Mac Jones stepped in and kept the offense on track with consistently strong play.

Jones went 5-3 in his eight starts, throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions while posting a career-best 97.4 passer rating.

Purdy started the other nine games, leading the 49ers to a 7-2 record while throwing for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Also on the 49ers' quarterback depth chart are Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Rourke.

CBS Sports' Jordan Dajani recently ranked the NFL's best and worst quarterback situations entering the 2026 season, placing the 49ers at No. 1.

"Brock Purdy is the coolest story in the NFL," Dajani wrote. "The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft came in and led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game as a rookie, despite receiving his first professional start in Week 14 that year. In Purdy's first full season as a starter in 2023, he set the NFL record for most yards per attempt (9.6), set the franchise record for passing yards in a season (4,280), made the Pro Bowl, and finished fourth in MVP voting."

Dajani also highlighted Purdy's career 104.0 passer rating, which ranks first in 49ers franchise history—a remarkable accomplishment given the organization's rich quarterback tradition.

"A whopping 58.3% of his third-down and fourth-down attempts went for first downs in 2025," Dajani continued. "That was the highest success rate by any quarterback over the past 35 seasons. Kyle Shanahan obviously deserves credit for that stat as well."

Purdy's accomplishments were a major reason the 49ers topped the rankings, but Dajani also pointed to Jones' value as one of the league's best backup quarterbacks. The veteran gives San Francisco a proven insurance policy if Purdy is forced to miss time again, a critical asset for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

One of Jones' most memorable performances came in the 49ers' Week 5 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium, where he demonstrated both toughness and poise while leading an injury-ravaged team.

"In that 26-23 overtime victory, Jones threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns," Dajani wrote. "It made him just the fourth quarterback since 1950 to start 3-0 while throwing for 800 yards and six touchdowns in a player's first three games with a new team, according to CBS Sports Research. The others were Kurt Warner and Matthew Stafford with the Rams, and Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs. Wild."

Dajani concluded that while Jones may not be an elite quarterback, he has shown he can win games as an NFL starter, making him a valuable asset to the 49ers and a key reason San Francisco boasts the league's top quarterback situation in this ranking.

49ers Goldrush Transformers Review: Is Hasbro's NFL Crossover Worth Buying?

Hasbro's Transformers x NFL collaboration has delivered a unique collectible for San Francisco 49ers fans. One of the toy maker's latest releases, Goldrush, is a 5.5-inch action figure that transforms from an Autobot into a surprisingly detailed 49ers helmet, considering its size.

The first wave of the Transformers x NFL line featured figures inspired by the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and Pittsburgh Steelers. The 49ers join the second wave alongside the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings.

At around $30, Goldrush is reasonably priced by today's action figure standards. Whether you're a lifelong 49ers fan who grew up collecting Transformers or a newer fan looking for a unique display piece, this collectible offers a fun blend of football and nostalgia.

The figure is currently available here on Amazon but can likely be found at retailers such as Target and Walmart, depending on availability.

While many modern Transformers figures tend to appreciate in value over time, the first wave of NFL-themed releases—originally launched in December 2025—can still be found at their initial-release prices.

Build quality

Once out of the packaging, Goldrush feels comparable in quality to other modern Transformers figures. It's primarily constructed of plastic but features several impressive details, especially considering its size. The 49ers logo is prominently displayed on the helmet—and on the arms in robot mode—while the iconic helmet stripes become part of Goldrush's chest armor in robot mode.

Articulation is solid, allowing Goldrush to stand securely on its own in robot form. The figure also includes a pair of accessories that add to the display options.

And yes, for anyone wondering, Goldrush is an Autobot. In fact, every figure released in the Transformers x NFL line so far has been an Autobot. Some 49ers fans might argue Hasbro missed an opportunity by not making the Cowboys or Chiefs version a Decepticon.

Accessories

Goldrush includes two accessories. The first is a football, which is prominently displayed inside the packaging. It's a fun addition if you plan to display the figure, although younger collectors may find it's the first piece to disappear. By the way, Goldrush, in his packaging, gives off "The Catch" vibes, with the robot displayed reaching for the football accessory.

The football attaches securely to Goldrush's hands using small pegs. There is even a dedicated spot to attach it when in helmet mode (it attaches via a peg inside the chin strap).

The second accessory is a mini football helmet that fits over Goldrush's head in robot form. Does a robot really need a helmet? Probably not—but it's a fun extra. Unfortunately, it only appears to fit figures in the Transformers x NFL line. Again, perhaps a missed opportunity to stick a 49ers-style helmet on an Optimus Prime figure.

Unlike the football, there doesn't appear to be a dedicated storage location for the mini helmet when the figure is transformed into helmet mode, making it easier to misplace over time. Additionally, it comes off the head very easily (often unintentionally) in robot mode, so you may lose it either way.

Transformation

Like most modern Transformers toys, Goldrush features a more intricate transformation process than many fans may remember from the 1980s and 1990s. Fortunately, it's still relatively straightforward compared to many current Transformers releases.

The transformation requires 23 steps to switch between robot and helmet modes, and the included instructions are clear and easy to follow. Still, with all the twists and turns involved in the process, it could become frustrating for some.

The process does include a bit of parts-forming, meaning one piece must be removed and reattached elsewhere. Specifically, the lower portion of the facemask is detached and stored on Goldrush's back while in robot mode. Since the piece has a designated place in both configurations, it's unlikely to get lost, but it's worth noting for any collectors who aren't fans of parts-forming.

As expected with a transforming helmet, there are a few visible gaps in helmet mode. They aren't particularly distracting, but collectors planning to display Goldrush exclusively as a helmet should be aware of them.

Final verdict

Overall, Goldrush is a fun, well-designed collectible that successfully combines two iconic brands. It's exactly the kind of toy I would have loved as a kid.

My youngest son, who has become a die-hard 49ers fan and sports enthusiast, will likely enjoy this figure, whereas someone like me might just place it on my work desk in helmet form. Fortunately, my son is old enough to appreciate it without breaking it—the figure is recommended for ages 8 and up.

If you're both a 49ers fan and a Transformers enthusiast, Goldrush is an easy recommendation. It offers a fun dose of nostalgia, solid build quality, and a very unique way to show off your team pride.

The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran wide receiver Mike Evans this offseason as part of a major overhaul of their receiving corps. The hope is that the six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion can elevate the offense while giving quarterback Brock Purdy a dependable boundary target and a proven red-zone weapon.

Although offensive tackle Trent Williams recently called Evans a "Hall of Fame player," the veteran receiver was left off ESPN's list of the NFL's top 10 wide receivers entering the 2026 season.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler unveiled his list of the league's top wide receivers. The rankings are based on feedback from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, reflecting the league's top players entering the 2026 season rather than their career accomplishments.

While Evans didn't crack the top 10, he did receive enough votes to earn honorable mention.

A year ago, Evans ranked No. 9 in ESPN's wide receiver rankings, down from No. 8 in 2024.

"He's declining, but he's sort of timeless, still big and athletic and gets open," an NFC scout told Fowler. "Will be interesting to see how head coach Kyle Shanahan utilizes him in different ways."

Evans enters his 13th NFL season after appearing in just eight games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025 due to hamstring and clavicle injuries. Before last season, however, he had eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 NFL campaigns.

The Buccaneers selected Evans with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he has since amassed 13,052 receiving yards and 108 touchdowns during his decorated career. Now with the 49ers, Evans will look to prove he remains one of the NFL's top receivers while helping boost San Francisco's Super Bowl chances in 2026.
One rookie, however, stood out more than the rest to former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who is now the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Speaking with Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area at the American Century Championship golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe, Saleh identified second-round defensive tackle Alfred Collins as the biggest surprise from the 49ers' rookie class.

"Alfred, I know he was a second-round pick and all, but he's still probably the biggest surprise to me in terms of just how much better he got from training camp, and as the season went on," Saleh said. "I really think he's going to be special. His mindset to get better, his work ethic, he's only going to get better. And when it triggers for him, he's going to be a bear to stop."

Although Collins showed flashes during his rookie campaign, he and fellow first-year defensive tackle CJ West tied for the team's lowest overall Pro Football Focus defensive grade (35.0). Both players have plenty of room to grow, and Saleh is confident they will continue to develop.

Saleh also expressed disappointment that first-round pick Mykel Williams' rookie season was cut short by an ACL injury. However, he had high praise for two other first-year defenders—cornerback Upton Stout and safety Marques Sigle.

"Upton is going to be an elite corner in this league," Saleh predicted. "Hair-trigger, violent. I mean, he made tackles last year on tight ends that guys his size aren't supposed to make. And it's like he didn't even flinch—just a relentless mindset.

"Same thing, Sigle's going to have a hell of a career. Just all the way across the board, I thought the entire defensive class last year, every single one of them, is going to be a mainstay in the NFL."

Saleh's comments are an encouraging sign that the young 49ers defensive class might form the foundation of the team's defense for years to come.

Where does the San Francisco 49ers' offensive trio of quarterback, running back, and pass-catcher rank among the NFL's best?

Jared Dubin of CBS Sports released his annual "Triplets" rankings, evaluating every team's top quarterback, running back, and pass-catcher to determine the league's strongest offensive trios.

The 49ers' combination of quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey, and wide receiver Mike Evans landed at No. 8 overall. According to Dubin, however, San Francisco was one of the toughest teams to evaluate.

"The Niners are once again a difficult team to rank," Dubin wrote. "Not only do you have to disentangle their players from the Kyle Shanahan system, you also have to figure out how to feel about injury issues at multiple spots (Purdy missed extended time last year and Evans swaps in for TE George Kittle here after the latter's Achilles injury) as well as the gap between McCaffrey's rushing efficiency and his prowess as a receiver out of the backfield."

Purdy was limited to nine games last season because of a turf toe injury, while Evans appeared in only eight games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after battling hamstring and clavicle injuries.

While McCaffrey totaled an impressive 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns last season, his 3.9 yards per carry marked his lowest average since 2020, when he averaged 3.8 yards per carry in just three games.

"The Niners were the first team to receive any top-five votes, and they're one of just two teams that stayed in the exact same place on the list as last year," Dubin added.

The only other team to remain in the same position was the Cleveland Browns, who once again ranked last.

Within the NFC West, the Los Angeles Rams' trio of Matthew Stafford, Kyren Williams, and Puka Nacua finished second overall, trailing only the Cincinnati Bengals. The Seattle Seahawks ranked 14th, while the Arizona Cardinals came in at No. 26.

There was plenty of speculation surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones this offseason. Many believed the team could trade Brock Purdy's backup before or during the 2026 NFL Draft. That never materialized, and Jones appears poised to remain Purdy's primary backup heading into the season.

Still, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton believes the 49ers should at least revisit the idea.

Moton recently identified one trade each NFL team should consider before the start of the 2026 season, selecting Jones as the 49ers' most logical trade candidate. While San Francisco reportedly sought a first-round pick for the veteran quarterback before the draft—a price considered too steep by interested teams—Moton argues the 49ers should lower their asking price.

Of course, if no team is willing to meet that value, keeping Jones on the roster remains the smart move.

"Because of quarterback Brock Purdy's injury history, the 49ers should keep Jones unless a team offers at least a second-round pick," Moton wrote.

Earlier this offseason, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle noted that the 49ers could become more open to moving Jones if Kurtis Rourke, the team's seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft who spent his rookie season on the non-football injury (NFI) list, shows enough promise.

Jones proved to be a capable replacement for Purdy last season when the starter missed time with a turf toe injury. However, with Jones scheduled to become a free agent in 2027, the 49ers risk losing him without receiving anything in return.

"Keep in mind that Jones is set to be a free agent next offseason and may chase an opportunity to start elsewhere," Moton wrote. "Coming off a season in which he threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games (eight fill-in starts), he won't be able to increase his stock unless Purdy is on the sidelines."

Ultimately, the decision may come down to how confident the 49ers are in their championship aspirations. If they believe they're legitimate Super Bowl contenders, keeping Jones as one of the NFL's more experienced backup quarterbacks could be more valuable than the draft compensation they might receive in a trade. After all, San Francisco's offense remained productive with Jones under center during Purdy's absence last season.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner remains one of the NFL's most respected defensive players. Although he missed 11 games last season after suffering a dislocated and fractured right ankle, the All-Pro linebacker still earned the top spot in a prominent offseason ranking.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler continued his annual NFL position rankings this week, unveiling his list of the league's top off-ball linebackers. The rankings are based on feedback from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, reflecting the league's top players entering the 2026 season rather than their career accomplishments.

Warner claimed the No. 1 spot for the fourth consecutive year.

"Rarely does a player miss most of a season due to injury and maintain his standing in our top 10," Fowler wrote. "Warner, however, earned around 70% of the first-place votes. It was a slight drop from the previous year, but his status in the position hierarchy remains clear."

The good news for the 49ers is that Warner is healthy and expected to be fully cleared for training camp, returning as the emotional leader and centerpiece of the team's defense.

"He diagnoses faster than anyone," one NFL coordinator told Fowler. "That's really his secret sauce. Processes the game at an incredibly fast level."

Before last season, Warner had never finished a campaign with fewer than 118 tackles. Even in limited action, he earned a 93.2 defensive grade and a 91.5 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus—both the highest among all off-ball linebackers.

"Warner has been an All-Pro four times since 2020, second only to edge rusher Myles Garrett (five) during that span," Fowler added. "An ankle injury limited Warner to six games last season, but he made the most of those appearances with 51 tackles (two for loss), three pass deflections, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery."

As Warner enters his ninth NFL season, he'll look to anchor a revamped 49ers defense and help lead San Francisco back into Super Bowl contention.

Analyst: 49ers offense the 'most dangerous' in the NFC West

Few are picking the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC West in 2026. After all, the Los Angeles Rams enter the season as Super Bowl favorites, while the Seattle Seahawks are the defending NFC West champions.

Still, one NFL Network analyst believes the 49ers boast the division's most dangerous offense, led by quarterback Brock Purdy and head coach Kyle Shanahan's play-calling.

"This offense, it's the most dangerous in that division, in my opinion," former NFL linebacker Manti Te?o said on NFL Network.

"This offense, it's the most dangerous in that division"

Manti on the @49ers 👀 pic.twitter.com/5R9Mpr5atd
— Good Morning Football (@gmfb) July 13, 2026

Te?o acknowledged that the Rams offense deserves the respect it receives, praising the playmakers Los Angeles has assembled. However, he believes opposing defenses have coverage options that can help limit the Rams' explosiveness.

The 49ers present a different challenge. According to Te?o, defenses can't effectively account for both Shanahan's rushing attack and passing game.

"When I'm a defense going against the San Francisco 49ers, I can only put my defenses in two categories: one-high or two-high," Te?o said. "One-high is good against the run, two-high is good against the pass. I don't have one that's good against both. So I have to pick my poison here.

"Now, when I am looking at RB Christian McCaffrey, I'm going to stack the box. But then what are you going to do with WR Mike Evans? You can't stack the box and have a safety over Mike Evans all the time. So for Mike Evans, this will probably be the best situation he's been in. For Christian McCaffrey, this could be possibly the best situation he's been in because now defenses, you have to pick your poison."

Evans, who joined the 49ers in free agency after spending 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, headlines a revamped wide receiver group with the potential to be even more explosive in 2026. Meanwhile, San Francisco finished fifth in the NFL in passing yards last season, underscoring the potential of Purdy and Shanahan's offense.

With Evans joining established stars like McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle, Shanahan and Purdy have every reason to be excited about the possibilities.

"I love what they got over there in L.A.," Te?o continued. "I love what they have and their ability to put a lot of points up on the board. But if I'm a defense, I'm staying up late at night trying to figure out how do I stop Christian McCaffrey, knowing that I have to guard somebody like Mike Evans out there at wide receiver—not to mention you've got George Kittle and all of those guys.

"So I think they are the most dangerous offense in that division."

As if Myles Garrett joining the Los Angeles Rams wasn't troubling enough for the San Francisco 49ers, speculation about Aaron Donald returning from retirement continues to gain momentum.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter provided the latest update on Donald's status during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, and it's not the news 49ers fans were hoping to hear.

Video recently surfaced showing Donald at the Rams' practice facility, where the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year appeared to be testing whether a return to football is realistic.

"He told the team that he wanted to go there, work out, see how he felt, see how he reacted, see everything that went along with being back in pads, on the football field, and seeing how it made him feel," Schefter said.

"Now, I don't know what he told them about that after he went through those workouts at the facility, but I really think it was just a trial method to see how his whole body reacted, how his mind reacted to being back out there."

Schefter said a reunion with the Rams makes perfect sense for Donald, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. If the defensive tackle does return, Schefter believes Los Angeles could initially manage his workload, perhaps limiting him to 12-15 snaps per game.

McAfee wasn't buying that projection, arguing that if Donald comes back, it will be because he intends to play a significant role on the Rams' defense.

"It's an unbelievably attractive arrangement for him," Schefter added. "It's just a question of whether he wants to go through and do it. My guess is, in the end, that he will—just a guess—because obviously he's thinking hard about it. There are a lot of people that want him back there.

"He has to make the decision, ultimately, but I would think it's got to be awfully enticing for him to come back and play this year when the Super Bowl would be in L.A."

If Donald ultimately decides to return, the Rams' defensive front could be even more formidable when the 49ers open the season against Los Angeles in Australia.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is widely regarded as one of the NFL's brightest offensive minds. His performance last season—leading an injury-riddled roster to a 12-win campaign and a playoff berth—only strengthened that reputation.

However, it wasn't enough to earn Shanahan a top-three spot in the Associated Press' ranking of the NFL's best head coaches.

Shanahan landed at No. 4, trailing Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs, Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams, and Mike Macdonald of the Seattle Seahawks.

Part of the reason may be Shanahan's inability to capture a Super Bowl title. Although he has guided the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances, San Francisco came up short both times.

"Shanahan is the only coach on the top 5 list who hasn't won a Super Bowl," Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press wrote. "He guided the injury-depleted 49ers to a 12-5 record last season and a Week 18 matchup against Seattle for the No. 1 seed. San Francisco beat Philadelphia on the road in the playoffs before losing to Seattle in the divisional round."

Despite that, Shanahan's résumé continues to place him among the NFL's elite coaches. He owns an 82-67 regular-season record, has led the 49ers to the playoffs in five of the past seven seasons, and is 9-5 in postseason action.

"In nine seasons, Shanahan has led the 49ers to five playoff appearances and two Super Bowl appearances, including an overtime loss to Kansas City," Maaddi added.

The 49ers will once again enter the 2026 season with Super Bowl aspirations. Reaching that goal won't be easy, however, as they'll have to navigate a loaded NFC West featuring the Super Bowl-favorite Rams and the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks.

Brandon Aiyuk has targeted just about everyone on social media this offseason—the San Francisco 49ers, his former agent, the NFL Players Association, and even his friend, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Now, one former 49ers standout believes Aiyuk may have burned one too many bridges, suggesting the wide receiver's bizarre offseason saga could mark the end of his NFL career.

Aiyuk hasn't played since suffering ACL and MCL injuries during the 2024 season, shortly after signing a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the 49ers. His relationship with the team deteriorated during his rehabilitation after San Francisco voided his guaranteed money, reportedly due to his alleged failure to meet contractual rehab obligations.

The situation escalated when Aiyuk cut off communication with the 49ers, prompting the team to place him on the reserve/left squad list, where he remains.

Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner didn't hold back while discussing Aiyuk's situation during a recent episode of his podcast, The Grit Code.

"What I'm going to say is Brandon Aiyuk sealed his fate," Whitner said, via Nilaav Ranjan Gogoi of Essentially Sports. "Brandon Aiyuk will never play another down in the NFL. Yeah, you went at the 49ers front office and their coaching staff. You were very disgruntled, but the only chance you had was Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders. That was the only person you had to go to battle for you…

"And for Brandon Aiyuk to not understand that and go on social media and attack Jayden Daniels and his mom, you sealed your fate… So sometimes burning bridges is okay. Not in this instance. So I think that's rest in peace for Brandon Aiyuk's career."

Aiyuk's latest feud began after a 49ers fan yelled, "F--k Brandon Aiyuk!" at Daniels. The Commanders quarterback responded with a smile and a laugh, and Aiyuk apparently took offense at his friend not defending him.

While Whitner believes Aiyuk's NFL career is over, it's still possible another team could take a chance on the receiver after the 49ers eventually release him, likely on a low-risk, one-year veteran-minimum contract.

However, that scenario can't happen until Aiyuk files for reinstatement, reportedly a necessary step before San Francisco can release him. The receiver has insisted he has no intention of doing so.

"I will not be reinstating with them nor ever doing any kind of business with them," Aiyuk wrote on Instagram.

For now, Aiyuk remains under contract with the 49ers on the reserve/left squad list. He is not taking up a roster spot or being paid, so there is no urgency for the team to act immediately.

Whitner's comments echo the growing sentiment that Aiyuk's public disputes and social media outbursts may have significantly damaged any hopes of returning to the NFL.
