Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history.

A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy.

Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end.

"I am worried about him," Jones shared on FS1's "Speak." "And I'm not worried about him like he's just going to be a terrible quarterback. I'm not saying that. But Brandon Aiyuk brings what Davante Adams brings, what Justin Jefferson brings, what Amari Cooper brings, and that is the ability to run great routes and get instant separation."

Jones emphasizes the significance of this for any quarterback, particularly highlighting the importance of timing in route-running.

"It's a reason why a lot of people say Brandon Aiyuk is the best wide receiver on the Niners, because he does wide receiver things—he runs routes," Jones continued. "And everybody wants to sit here and act like it's easy. It's not easy. Brandon, [Jauan] Jennings, Deebo Samuel, they run the same routes. These routes are in the Niners playbook. Brandon Aiyuk is just different at them.

"And when you lose that type of player, now you're trying to either go into the draft or free agency to find a guy that can do some of those things. Brandon Aiyuk is a rare route runner with the ability, at the line of scrimmage, to get off press coverage immediately and win, and Brock Purdy sees that."

Jones adds that Aiyuk's potential absence will require a significant adjustment from Purdy, knowing that he won't have a key contributor who can consistently create separation like the star receiver.

Aiyuk is set to earn $14.124 million on a team-exercised fifth-year option. The ascending 26-year-old receiver has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past two seasons.

Why former GM doesn't expect 49ers QB Brock Purdy's new deal to top the market

By David Bonilla
May 3

Brock Purdy is poised to become the highest-paid player for the San Francisco 49ers next year. That's when the team can begin contract extension negotiations. There's ongoing speculation about where Purdy's impending mega-deal will land compared to the contracts of other elite quarterbacks. While some anticipate he could command the highest salary in the league, especially if he replicates his stellar 2023 performance, others suggest he deserves to be handsomely paid, but without necessarily topping the market. Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum, currently an ESPN analyst, offered his viewpoint on "NFL Live," outlining why he thinks it's advantageous for both Purdy and the 49ers if the quarterback doesn't demand the highest salary in the league. "Well,

Ian Rapoport sends clear message regarding 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel

By David Bonilla
Apr 30

One thing is clear: Ian Rapoport expects Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel to be on the San Francisco 49ers roster when the team takes the field in Week 1 of the 2024 season. At this point, most probably feel that way. The fact that both stayed with the team throughout the draft clearly signals that general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan intend to retain their two talented receivers—at least for one more season. "Week 1 of 2024, it looks like they both will be [on the roster]," Rapoport told guest host Tom Pelissero on "The Rich Eisen Show." However, nothing in the NFL is ever certain. "Now, look, crazy things can happen," Rapoport continued. "Someone loses a star receiver, they decide to give the 49ers something of value for this

While the 49ers repeatedly insisted that signing Aiyuk to a long-term deal remained the priority, there were reports of trade talks involving him and Samuel. After San Francisco drafted wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with the No. 31 overall pick, the Aiyuk trade rumors cooled off, and the Samuel ones heated up. RELATED: John Lynch on Aiyuk, Samuel

Who's more vital to 49ers' offense: Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk?

By David Bonilla

Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk were both subjects of trade speculation before and during the draft. While the San Francisco 49ers seem poised to retain both receivers for at least one more season, their long-term futures with the team remain uncertain. The 49ers seek to sign Aiyuk to a contract extension, which could lead to efforts to offload Samuel's salary as early as next year. However, this remains speculative as the team's brass continues to express support for both players.
